The common adverse reaction to Allopurinol is skin rash. Skin reactions can be severe and sometimes fatal. Therefore, treatment with Allopurinol should be discontinued and take advise form the doctor immediately if a rash develops. Some patients with the most severe reaction also had fever, chills, arthralgias, cholestatic jaundice, eosinophilia and mild leukocytosis or leukopenia.  Most Common adverse reaction are probably causally related. Other adverse reactions like Gastrointestinal, Metabolic and Nutritional, Skin and Appendages, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Hemic and Lymphatic, Musculoskeletal, Nervous related, Respiratory, Skin and Appendages, Skin and Appendages, Urogenital  are also noted in patients.

General Allopurinol side effects of allopurinol have been more likely and more severe in patients with reduced renal function.  Other Dermatologic, Hypersensitivity, Hepatic, Gastrointestinal, Hematologic, Renal, Nervous system related, Ocular, Immunologic, Metabolic and Musculoskeletal  side effects are also recorded apart from the common Allopurinol side effects.

 

Usage of Allopurinol:

Allopurinol Tablets are recommended for primary or secondary gout, hyperuricemia resulting from chemotherapy for malignancies, recurrent calcium oxalate renal calculi.  Allopurinol Tablets and injection are recommended for management of patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumor malignancies when concurrently receiving cancer therapy that causes elevations of serum and urinary uric acid levels. Injection is given to patients who cannot tolerate oral therapy.

 

Allopurinol Dosage:

Allopurinol Dosage is individualized as per the age and condition of the patient. It is not only recommended for gout but also for conditions like hyperuricemia resulting from chemotherapy for malignancies, recurrent calcium oxalate renal calculi. There is a huge difference in dose of adult and children in each of the above mentioned conditions.  It is better to consult your doctor before starting the dose.
